University of Utah Rehabilitation Center Helps TBI Victims Post Injury

By Pam Floyd

On a bright, sunny day Abigayle Ottley and her friends went to the Jordanelle Reservoir to enjoy the day when disaster struck.  After crashing on a personal watercraft, Abigayle suffered a broken back, pelvis, and a brain injury.  Despite being on life support and a coma for a short time, she credits her rehabilitation team at the University of Utah for saving her life, and never giving up on her.

The Rehabilitation Team at University of Utah Health Care understands the complexities of brain injuries and the unique needs of patients recovering from these injuries. At the University, we have specialty trained teams to treat these injuries under the leadership of a board certified physiatrist, also known as rehabilitation physicians, who are nerve, muscle, and bone experts that treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move.

We also understand that rehabilitation for brain injury does not end when you go home.  Innovative quality care with an emphasis on community re-entry is provided at University of Utah Health Care Community & Outpatient Rehabilitation Services.  The Neuro Outpatient Rehabilitation therapy team has extensive training and experience working with neurologically impaired clients.  Our outpatient program gives patients an opportunity to develop and practice skills that will be of long term benefit to their independence.

Many people with brain injuries similar to Abigayle’s survive and must navigate through life with many challenges ahead of them.  We support the Brain Injury Alliance of Utah’s efforts in brain injury awareness and offer resources, support groups, and the hope of getting back one’s independence after brain injury and living a productive lifestyle within their home and community.
