Rachelle's Story

I got involved with the Brain Injury Association through a friend of mine, Amy Davis.  Amy is a former Miss Utah and sustained a brain injury while performing a cheerleading stunt in college.  Amy worked very closely with members of the Brain Injury Association of Utah (BIAU). I am a singer-songwriter and was writing for Amy during the summer of 2005 when she introduced me to Ron Roskos and Teresa Such-Neibar, two members of the Board of Directors for BIAU.  I was very new to brain injury awareness and was touched by the passion and dedication Ron and Teresa had for this cause. You can imagine my excitement when they later asked me to write a song for their 1st Annual Brain Injury Awareness Fundraiser.  I had been doing some research into the subject so I could get my "motivation" to write a song that would be perfect. I remember driving to Primary Children's Hospital the day I would meet with Ron and Teresa to show them what I had so far.  I played a little bit hoping to impress them with all the research I had been doing on the subject.... but an interesting thing happened.  While they liked what I had, Teresa started offering some ideas to me.  More than anything, she said, we want people to know that we understand and we are here to help. She told me there were actual members on the board who have brain injuries so that those who come looking for help can see others just like them making their lives work.  The message was so simple---yet I had made it so difficult in my quest for the perfect song. The song I had "prepared" left my mind after that meeting and as I imagined Teresa and Ron's commitment and love for the people they were serving, the song "For You" started playing out. It was simpler, but that was just the point.  Sometimes we just need to know that there are people out there who want to help and who know what we are going through. I would personally like to thank Ron and Teresa for the opportunity to be involved with this cause.
