The Brain Injury Alliance of Utah’s Annual Run, Walk and Roll 5K! For the past 18 years the Brain Injury Alliance of Utah (formerly the Brain Injury Association of Utah) has held a 5K event that supports the mission and the values of the BIAU.
In 1989 avid runner and devoted father, Brian Barker, was the victim in a hit and run accident and left on the side of the road. Fortunately, he survived; however, he sustained a massive traumatic brain injury that caused him to lose his short-term and long term memory. This caused him to forget many of his family members including his daughter and brother. Not only did he suffer significant emotional scars, physically, he was unable maintain his balance to do what he loved, run. At the BIAU we see life altering accidents like Brian’s far too often. In an effort to regain and restore his balance, and the life he once had, was born the idea of 5k.
Our Run, Walk and Roll was built on the foundation that allows survivors, supporters, friends, and the community to become involved. Inspired by Brian Barker, our 5K has given us the opportunity to serve and change the lives of so many, by allowing us to continue our mission of hope and healing. Born out of the idea that the “impossible” can be achieved. The BIAU Run, Walk, Roll is one of the largest 5K’s in Salt Lake and has easily become one of the most favored events.
The 19th Annual Run, Walk and Roll 5K will take place on May 18, 2013 in Liberty Park. The run begins promptly at 8am and runners will be timed, participants are asked to come 45 minutes to an hour in advance for check-in and registration. All those electing to Roll must be in a wheelchair or recumbent bike. Our 5K includes a vendor fair, prizes for top fundraisers and runners, and a raffle!
